The challenge of battery heat generation

Thermal management is vital to achieving efficient, durable and safe operation. The choice of the correct solution is influenced by the C-rate, the rate at which level the battery is providing energy.

Higher C-Rate, more frequent cycling causes increased heat dissipation therefore an effective cooling concept is mandatory. Thermal stability is crucial for battery performance and durability - battery degradation and damage will bereduced and downtime minimized. Battery safety must be prioritized.

Battery lifetime could be increased

Research shows that an ambient temperature of about 20°C or slightly below is ideal for Lithium-Ion batteries. If a battery operates at 30°C instead of a more moderate lower room temperature, lifetime is reduced by 20 percent. At 40°C, the losses in lifetime can be near 40 percent and if batteries are charged and discharged at 45°C, the lifetime is only half of what can be expected if used at 20°C.

Liquid cooling for battery packs

As electricity flows from the charging station through the charging cables and into the vehicle battery cell, internal resistances to the higher currents are responsible for generating these high amounts of heat.
Active water cooling is the best thermal management method to improve battery pack performance. It is because liquid cooling enables cells to have a more uniform temperature throughout the system whilst using less input energy, stopping overheating, maintaining safety, minimising degradation and alowing higher performance.
Based on market demand, we have developed two different liquid cooling solutions specially designed for Li-ion Battery Energy Storage Outdoor Cabinets:

1 - a side-mounted chiller up to 12 kW to be placed outdoor on the cabinet door
2 - a stand-alone chiller up to 12 kW to be placed inside the cabinet
Both solutions safely operate in cold and hot regions, between -25 and +50°C. Offer up to 800 V DC power supply to directly connect with the battery system, not needing any power conversion; CE/UL certifications for worldwide operations; high energy efficiency and reliability.
Numerous other solutions are available within our range of products in the catalogue; others can be defined together according to the specific needs of your customers.

Air cooling for battery shelters

Some PV shelters combine passive and active air cooling. In these cases, the natural convection through exhaust filters is supported by an auxiliary cooling unit, activated only during the warmest months. Cooling units both serve the battery pack and the electronic components of the control panel; they can be powered with summer extra energy production of the photovoltaic system to keep energy consumption under control.

Fire protection

Storage systems with lithium-ion batteries are crucial to the clean energy of today and tomorrow, but old or damaged battery cells can cause fires. Fast detection and extinguishing solutions are needed. We combine them with our beacons and sounders to ensure that the event is properly reported.
